OPening Word
Founded in 1991 by Sister Mary Ryan, OP, the OPening Word began with five women in Wyandanch.

Today, the Opening Word addresses the interconnection between literacy, economic self-sufficiency, and self-esteem, and unlocks the language ability of immigrant women. They serve 260 women with waiting lists in Amityville, Huntington Station, and Wyandanch and provide a key to personal empowerment and success in the workforce.

With retired teachers as volunteers, OPening Word’s 140 Sisters and lay volunteers hold multiple degrees, many in education and administration. Volunteers work with a teaching staff of nine, two caseworkers, and a Post-Secondary Transition Program (PSTP) teacher.
